In April 2011, the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet created the Senior Apprentice Company (SAC) as a new vehicle to enhance and expand the company’s existing arts outreach program in the Shreveport-Bossier City community. The founding guidelines for SAC envision a performing group with a specific mission to not only explore innovative methods for bringing the art of classical ballet to underserved populations in our community, but also to provide its own young members with an introduction to meaningful community engagement and public service. These goals enrich SMB’s overarching mission statement and also address our community’s need for high-quality yet accessible performing arts experiences, especially for economically disadvantaged youth and their families.
SAC members are chosen annually through open audition. In the 2011-2012 season, the inaugural SAC performed for over 5,500 citizens in our community – including free performances for over 3,000 students – at venues such as Municipal Auditorium, the Red River Revel, and Riverivew Theater in a special production of Prokofiev’s classic musical tale “Peter and the Wolf” on Friday, March 2, 2012.
