With great sadness, the Shreveport Metropolitan Ballet announces that the company’s founding Artistic Director, Marion Mills, passed away on Saturday, October 8 after a long illness.
Mrs. Mills was the leader of a group of community arts supporters who founded the classical ballet company, originally named Ballet Lyrique, in 1973. She served as Artistic Director until 2001, training generations of dancers through SMB and through her school, Theatre School of Dance. Under Mrs. Mills’ leadership, SMB partnered with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra to add live music to its annual “Nutcracker” productions and began a tradition of free community arts outreach programming that continues to expand today. The legacy that she left behind is evident in the many SMB alumni who are still actively involved with the company today – from current Artistic Director Kendra Meiki to many others who are board members, supporters, and parents of current dancers.
Services for Mrs. Mills will be held on Saturday, October 15 at 10:00 a.m. at Cypress Baptist Church in Benton, Louisiana.
SMB welcomes your personal remembrances and prayers for Mrs. Mills’ family below.
